I turned of the startup password and it worked fine then my mac crashed and the startup password returned with the mac background picture. I have tried turning it back on in preferences then shutting it down and restarting the computer. Then turning the password off again in preferences and again turning it off and on again... No joy. It still asks for the password.

I suggest that you make use of the option to enable/use the Automatic login feature
there is an option in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General
that needs to be unchecked [ ] Disable automatic login
I don't know what I was looking at but it appears it isn't and when I unlock it the auto login option is greyed out. What should I do?
When I go into Security and privacy there is no disable auto-login!
Are you saying that you do not see a screen like the screenshot that I posted?
Are you looking at the General ?
It's okay I had to turn off FileVault but automatic login still says off and is 'greyed' out
