How to convert DVD video to digital format

How can I upload a home video from a dvd? I have family videos that we have saved from video cassettes onto a DVD. I would like to save them to my Mac and then share them on the internet. How can I do that? Thanks!!

Do you have a DVD player plugged into your mac.

Click on the Desktop and click on Finder> Preferences> and check the box for CDS, DVDs and iPods

this so the DVDs icon will appear on your Desktop.

Place the DVD in the DVD player, and quit any software that starts up when a DVD is inserted.

Double-click on the DVDs icon on your Desktop, a Finder window will open, you will see two folders Video_TS and Audio_TS.

Make a new folder on your Desktop with an appropriate name for the content of the DVD.

Drag the Video_TS folder to the new folder you created. (the Video_TS folder contains both the video and the audio.)

Download this free app, https://handbrake.fr this will convert the Video_TS folder to mp4 files suitable for

viewing and sharing. mp4 is a widely accepted format. Although it may be daunting at first it is quite simple to

get the basics, if you are going to share your videos online then use the Web group under Preset, choose the lowest

resolution so files aren't too big for uploading. Experiment a little to get an optimum balance between file quality

and size for uploading. Remember uploading can take quite along time.

Thank you SO MUCH!!! Yes, it was a wonderful step by step "recipe" to accomplish the task. We had to first use an old VHS C-Cassettes to DVD converter which we hadn't used for years. Once that was accomplished (about 5 tapes could fit on one DVD disc.) the challenge was how to share it with distant family. DVD players are pretty much obsolete for young people so the videos had to be converted to files that could be sent. Finally, Apple's mail service allowed me to use my "Cloud" to send a file. It took a few hours to work through the steps but as we are "in lockdown" due to the pandemic, it was a good opportunity to work through the steps.
