where can i download dashboard widgets from? Apple have seemed to remove the download option from its website

Apple is done with Dashboard, so no more widgets. Look at your System Preferences : Extensions : Today category of widget replacements (that are not based on the old widget code). These will appear in the Today section of the slide-in Notifications panel.

I don't think you can any more, do you not use Notifications.
