ipad not recognized by mac book

My mac book air will not recognize my Ipad. It does recognize my iphone. I have tried the apple help link that tells you to go to the system preferences, etc. It did not help. I need more advanced help in getting the ipad to show up on my laptop. Can anyone help with this?
