When I try to udpate ipad air with itunes, itunes opens windows file explorer. This is new ipad but I have had it sitting in my desk a few years. When I try to update via wifi it says the current software will not allow wifi update. I uninstalled Itunes and re-downloaded.

There are two versions, one from the Microsoft Store, the other a direct download from apple.com. In some cases the other version may perform better for you. Anti-virus software may sometimes interfere with iTunes update activity.
