The 7th generation will require the first generation Apple Pencil.

The 1st generation Apple Pencil ( the one with the chromed, metalised top band/cap ) is the Pencil the is compatible with the 2019, 7th gen iPad, iPad Air 3 and 5th iPad Mini.
