My 2016 MacBook Pro keyboard is to be replaced by Apple. FireVault has been on since I purchased and put the computer to work. Do I need to erase the drive before shipping it out to Apple to replace the keyboard? I have a current compete backup.

You should do the following: What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your Mac. Apple will erase the drive and install some version of macOS. Be sure the backup is current before you box it up. Also, if the backup is encrypted, too, then consider an unencrypted backup, just in case. There is no way to know what the drive will be when you get it back. Most likely, it won't be encrypted.

Thank you. I read the article / instruction from Apple you referred me to. It still is not clear to me if I need to wipe the drive. Rather, I thought they might be Inferring that if you are using (and have always used) fire vault, you are covered, no need to wipe it. If they did not have to wipe it to replace the keyboard it likely would be returned as shipped, leaving me to only have log on (fire vault protected) to return to routine use of the computer as before. Many words here and explanation, but I wanted to check to see if there was any measure of concurrence from others with my thoughts on this. As I have a proper backup I believe I am safe either way. Thank you again for sharing your thoughts.
