How do I sort the photos library chronologically by actual date taken, not the date I added them?

You can only sort the albums you create yourself, not the predefined albums, that Photos is automatically creating for you. They are all having a fixed sort order, depending on the individual album and the system version.

The "All Photos" album in Photos 5 on Catalina is sorted by the capture dare, the Imports Album and Recents Album are sorted by the date added.

You can create your own album "My Imports" as a smart album and sort it by the capture date

  • File > New Smart album
  • Date Added is in the last 30 days
  • Then sort this album by the capture date

To sort the smart album, ctrl-click it in the sidebar and set a sort option.
