2013 MacBook Pro OS upgrade emergency

Hi, I need help with my late 2013 MacBook Pro. It was fine and running 10.9.5 Maverick, and I backed up everything on Time Machine, then I tried to install El Capitan and all **** broke loose. Now it can’t find a startup disk at all. I’m terrified that I lost everything. It just keeps trying to install El Capitan, then says it will take 15 min, then stops and says it can’t do it and to restart and try again. I ran Disk Utility doctor and it says nothing is wrong. I tried shutting down and then holding down Control Option R when I turned it back on, and it just keeps trying to start El Capitan. Please help me.
