In addition to the other comments, which I agree with, I suggest that your hard drive is likely to be failing. I suggest you run Disk Utility and see what it says.
If I were advising you, then I would suggest that you recycle your 14 year old computer and buy a new computer.
The processor and the hard drive interface are the big speed issues. Both are slow as a glacier and nearly as old.
Adding RAM will not give any relief from those hardware limitations.
