USB-C to USB Adapter doesn't work with USB Superdrive

I bought a USB-C to USB Adapter to connect my USB Superdrive to my new Macbook Pro. Can't get the Superdrive USB plug into the adapter. Why? What do I need to use the Superdrive (2.03) with the Macbook Pro?

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 10.15

I'm trying to attach an Apple portable Disk drive to my new Mac Book Pro using a USB to USB-C adaptor. I'm getting the message USB Accessory Needs Power: Connect "Apple USB SuperDrive" to a USB port on this Mac. Impossible to do so directly as the connector from the disk drive is USB. What gives?
