Photos error

Tonight when I tried to save a downloaded photo to my Photos files, I got this message:

"Photos must quit because the photo library has become unavailable or the data is corrupt."

What causes this and is there a fix for it? I am desperate to save them. I do not have a backup, and when I inserted a thumb drive to try to drag them on, the folder crashes every time I click on any picture.
