2012 is exhibiting ? on boot. Recovery fails.
pRam zap doesn't fix.
No other ext back up available.
Intend to reinstall High Sierra on the 2012, if possible.

USB won't work for Target Disk Mode, for that you need Thunderbolt & Thunderbolt3 to Thunderbolt adapter, but not likely the 2019 would run the 10.13 Installer.
Or an external drive with 10.13 already installed on it then hold alt key on startup.

no. turns out the OEM HDD is kaput. Ordered an SSD replacement.
