It means make sure that your device is asleep. When you tap the power button on the top or the button on the side to put your phone to sleep, that means the device is locked. If you want to automatically backup with iCloud at night, your phone has to be locked, or be asleep as well as connected to WiFi and plugged into a wall socket to charge.


Sleep and locked mean the same thing.
