Multiple iPhones using same Apple ID.

When I set up phones for my then younger children, I used the same Apple ID. Fast forward several years, and now they are older and I need to separate their Apple ID from mine as our texts are now showing up on their Macbooks, etc. I need to create a unique ID for each of them and combine them via Family Sharing.

My concern is losing the data already on their phones including pictures, contacts, etc. Will this type of information be erased when the Apple ID is changed?

Any help or suggestions on the least painful way to make this change without me being killed by my two children?

If under 13 years old, you will need to set up Family Sharing to create an ID.

When changing to the new ID, there may be some data loss, but you can minimize it. If syncing photos with iCloud, ensure Optimization is turned off in Settings/Your Name/iCloud/Photos and/or in Photos/Preferences/iCloud. Then make sure full resolution photos are on the device/computer. When signing out of iCloud, if asked whether you want to retain data, choose yes. Messages conversations will be lost if they are addressed to the ID. See the article below for other places that the old ID should be removed. See Winston Churchill's response in the below discussion. Also set up Family Sharing between the IDs to keep access to your apps/purchases.
