The so-called free AppleTV subscription

I have AppleTV4 and a so-called free year's subscrption to the films on offer, for which I have a receipt.

However, every time I try to play a film I am asked for payment.

What gives?

Apple TV HD, tvOS 13

Movies that say rent or buy are from the iTunes Store and not free.

Your subscription is for Apple TV +

Apple TV + is Apple Original content. It’s a channel found within the Apple TV App. The shows included in your subscription will have the tv+ logo on them - those are free with your subscription and you will not be asked to pay for those. There are other channels and iTunes content in the TV App that requires payment - in other words there is no Apple TV Plus App (this causes confusion) It’s free Apple TV Plus not free Apple TV.

Thank you both for stating the obvious. I am not a complete beginner.

Hopefully someone will actually answer my question.

with all due respect, Klaus, re-read your original post. We did answer it as it was asked (and unless some major piece of info was left out, answered it correctly). Do you have any info to add to it? Maybe some specific info (what movie, for example).

Kilgore-Trout -- thank you for posting that; I was a bit at a loss in trying to reply politely. I think you did it better than I could have.
