My iphone storage say it's full but the icloud has hardly anything. It's like they are not communicating and it's a new thing.

Are you using the iOS mail app or the gmail app? Or some other third party mail app? This is what you should see in the iOS mail app. If you tap Edit, then you can tap Select All, then tap Delete at the bottom of the screen.

They don’t communicate because iPhone storage has nothing to do with iCloud storage. Purchasing more iCloud storage does not help and storage to your phone. You need to delete some content on your phone in order to free up some space.
I understand about the different storages now, thanks. How can I delete the majority of messages in gmail easily. When I checked google , it mentioned an edit button to the top right of the page. There is a circleT there with no edit underneath. I have an Iphone 6s+.
