87W or 61W Power Adapter for MacBook Pro 13in 2017

I have the MacBook Pro 13in 2017 and when I purchased the laptop I was given a 87W USB-C Power Adapter. However, while I was purchasing a new usbc cord, I noticied that it said it recommends 61W USB-C power adaptor. Did they give me the wrong one???

It is perfectly safe to use the 87W charger. The laptop will only draw the amount of power that it actually needs.

You seem to have received the wrong charger. Your model should come with the 61 watt charger. If you wish to use the 87 watt charger, then you need a different cable. That said, although you can use the larger wattage charger, I would not recommend it, as it could damage the computer should the computer start drawing more power than it is designed for.

The Macs have protective circuitry on both the I/O Boards and the Logic Board. If these protective circuits have failed, then the laptop isn't functioning correctly anyway and likely won't run at all with the 61W charger. The repair will still be the same. Yes there may be a one in a million chance of other components being damaged, but I think that would be extremely rare. I personally wouldn't worry about it, but I can understand it may be a concern for some.

That's true until something goes wrong causing the machine to draw excess power. With the smaller wattage adapter, that cannot happen. With the larger wattage adapter, the computer can draw excess power up to the limit of the adapter. But that could cause internal damage. A user should be aware of that. Fact is that it's not "perfectly" safe which was the point I tried to make.
