What is the difference between iMessage and Message? When I type in some friends’ name, a box pops up that says their phone # is not registered with iMessage. I’m able to text them from my iPhone with no problem.

That is because your iPad is not linked with text message forwarding on your iPhone. Follow these steps: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208386 Then you can text from your iPad. What was happening was you were messaging someone that did not have a iPhone and can only use text message. this runs through your carrier and iMessage goes through wifi or cellular, and you can do a lot more cool things than with text messaging.
