See How to update the software on your Mac - Apple Support

  1. Open the App Store app on your Mac.
  2. Click Updates in the App Store toolbar.
  3. Use the Update buttons to download and install any updates listed.
  4. When the App Store shows no more updates, the installed version of macOS and all of its apps are up to date. That includes SafariiTunes, iBooks, Messages, Mail, Calendar, Photos, and FaceTime. Later versions may be available by upgrading your macOS.

You may need to upgrade to El Capitan 10.11.6 using installer download from support page.

And later to see about going past that to later more current macOS try one such as Mojave

10.14.6. ~Initial upgrades past Mt. Lion 10.8.5 require the next level; things changed too much.

• How to upgrade to OS X El Capitan - Apple Support

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT206886

This would download an installer that takes a bit of time to get that part. Then that would

download and install the 10.11.6 system. A file named 'InstallMacOSX.dmg' will download

to your Mac. (either into Downloads or Applications folder)

Once that is installed and running, you'd have a new system; while that's different and a bit

better than Mt Lion, security updates had been lacking, even in El Capitan. So next would be

to consider what older software you have and need to use. ~ The issue with recent upgrades

is 32-bit (older) software & drivers. No longer used in Catalina 10.15.6; only 64-bit supported.

Check 64 bit compatibility:

If you may still need older printer drivers and other applications you may already have, the

next step could be Mojave macOS 10.14.6. This is last macOS to support both 32-bit & 64-bit.

The link and info starts in next page below (if you haven't further need for 32-bit software, you

could try upgrade to Catalina; the bugs may be worked out by now. If not Mojave, High Sierra?
