I have a Apple Watch series 1, 38mm 18crt gold edition, can this case, which I enjoy have the internal works exchanged for a newer version ie use the case and insert the workings of a series 5 installed?

No. That's not possible. If you want an Apple Watch Series 5, you have to buy one.

As I said I liked the uniqueness of my watch, which I might add cost $16,000 AUD, it’s a pity the case could not be reused. Plus I have a series 5 which I use every day.
Apple does not offer these services, nor do 3rd party vendors. If you want the internals of a Apple Series 5, you will need to purchase one.
