All stored email files have disappeared from my mail desktop

My system is Catalina version10.15.5.

For no apparent reason all of the files that I use to archive information

collected by emails have disappeared from my desktop Mail app.

I have searched for answers but non have been of any help.

It MUST be something simple that has happened but what ?

They are all still readily available on my iphone !
