How can I migrate old machine to the new Mac Mini?

Purchased a Mac Mini and it should be here next week.

This may be a silly question, but, I have never done this before.

I have been reading up on migration from our old machine to the new Mac Mini.

Enough storage. Seems easy enough with the migration assistant.

My question, so I can ease my wife's mind, is, will all data, programs, etc., including photos, which she is afraid we will lose during migration, migrate properly and we will not lose anything?

This is a big concern since this is the first time I will be doing this.

And yes, I also have an external hard drive for storage and connected to time machine and backs up on a regular basis...

Thanks in advance.
