Hope all is well joaonew,

Thanks for the additional information.

We tested this site and discovered the same behavior, that in Safari it doesn't open a new Mail message, and that in Chrome it does offer a new Mail message. In Safari, if you hold down the Send Mail button on the site, it will pop up with the options New Mail Message, Add to Contacts, and Copy Email. This sounds specific to the site.

If you are able to reproduce the issue in an additional iOS device, this may be a matter of how Safari is reading the PDF. This could also still be related to the file itself. It's extremely possible that Safari in iOS is not redirecting the links to a specific app in iOS. Safari in iOS may also have configurations you'll want to check. Review the information listed below.

"Content blockers are third-party apps and extensions that let Safari block cookies, images, resources, pop-ups, and other content."

Here's how to get a content blocker:

  1. Download a content blocking app from the App Store.
  2. Tap Settings > Safari > Content Blockers, then set up the extensions that you want. You can use more than one content blocker.

This information and more about Safari configurations can be found here: Clear the history and cookies from Safari on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Additionally, check Settings > Safari > Advanced > Experimental Features. Toggle on LinkPrefetch.

Afterwards, go to Settings > Safari and turn off Block Pop-ups. This is temporary to find out if there's a security feature in place blocking the links.

If you still can't open the two links while viewing the PDF in Safari, check if the links open in the PDF once it's imported to Books. Learn more about Books here: Read PDF documents in Books on iPhone.

Stay awesome!

Good day joaonew,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

Thanks for the information. Based on what you mentioned, you're working with a PDF that has a link added in its content or you have a web link leading to a PDF. You're able to open the link from multiple applications, except for Safari on iOS, correct? When you came to the conclusion that it's not working in Safari, did you have an alternate iOS device to compare it with? This would help sort out where the source of the concern is.

If you mean that you are not able to send the link mentioned in an email, did you seem to have this issue with only this link? Learn more about email attachments here: How to send attachments in Mail on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Best wishes!

Salutations joaonew,

Dogs are absolutely something special.

As for the concern you have with the mailto: and tel: links, can you confirm if this is happening with multiple sites using this configuration? If so, you may be able to get some help where you are when you Contact Apple Support.

It's great that you have Books as an alternative, but it's not unreasonable to have this working in Safari. If you have any specific preferences, please also leave Product Feedback.

Cheers!

Hello barberlives123,

Thanks for the welcoming and for the descriptive answer!

Yes, like the example link I sent in the post, I have a weblink that leads to a PDF that have some links on it, both the links tel: and mailto: doesn't work in Safari for iOS.

Yes, I tried in different iOS devices and none of them works with this 2 different links inside the pdf (tel and mailto), it does work on Google Chrome in the same devices, and on other platforms, macOS, Linux, etc.

Best,

Thanks for the awesome answer A_J_Rabbit.

I could reproduce the same thing you mentioned while holding down the "Send Email" and "Call now" buttons on the website, but I don’t believe this is unique to the website because those links are just a simple mailto and tel standard links, with nothing else encoded on them.

It is weird and non-friendly in the perspective of the User Experience while in Safari to hold down a button to trigger the action that a simple click would require, maybe this is a glitch on Safari or something that should have a simple solution.

I agree that Safari may not be redirecting the links to a specific app, but when these apps are native ones on the iPhone, like Mail and Phone this shouldn't be a problem, these apps are expected to receive these kind of links (again mailto: and tel:). Hopefully this is some kind of security issue from Safari that can be fixed on the product and server side, not on the client. I tried to change my Safari configuration as you mentioned, but none of them could make the links clickable with a one-click.

And the most weird is that the same behavior works on Safari for macOS, so I don't know how to move forward with this, I want our users to have a good user experience, but I can't be teaching every iPhone user that they are supposed to do a long press on the links in order to work, that is not intuitive at all.

About Books, once there the links work just fine. I would love to have a solution to this problem and allow those links to work in the pdf inside the Safari as well.

Stay safe and healthy.

Best regards,

Btw, no one mentioned but that picture on the first link I sent is from my dog 🥰
