Connect it to your mac, turn it on.
Open Disk Utility, click on View in the menubar
select Show All Devices.
Highlight the uppermost disk of the WD My Passport
not any indented Volume.
Click Erase.
Give the Disk a name,
Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Scheme: GUID Partition Map
Click Erase.
Once that is down your WD Passport is ready for use.
Do not install any WD software on the disk this
will interfere with the macs own management of the disk.
Connect it to your mac, turn it on.

Thank you, Eau Rouge. I just used your instructions to with a new external hard disk. Between your help with my Mojave installation and with this external HD, I'm ready to get my machine is good working order.
