I am locked out of my iPod touch and it won't restore

My daughter locked herself out of her iPod touch. We followed the steps to shut it down, connect it to the computer and turn it on via holding down the volume down button til the recover screen comes up. But it times out or it states that there is an error and try again. We've tried multiple times, switched cables and now it is locked on the restore screen. It won't even really power down. HELP!
