Macbook Pro Early 2011 OS X Reinstall OS X and NVRAM Problems

Hi,

so I have to tell a bit of the backstory to understand the origins of my problems:

I own a Macbook Pro Early 2011 since eight or nine years, which I bought factory new back then.

Three years back the very common error of an overheated graphics card happened and I had to reprogram my Macbook to use the backup graphics card. I worked like this for almost two years – always had to reprogram after an update or NVRAM reset.

Last year I decided to buy a new logic board for my computer, since the graphic cards are glued to the boards in the 2011 models. I built in the board and my computer was faster than ever before.

Alright, this is the part where the downfall is happening:

I made the mistake of upgrading the perfectly running OS X Sierra to High Sierra. My Macbook couldn‘t handle it and I had to wipe the drive to make a fresh start. I installed El Capitan, which at first worked fine, upgraded to Sierra and the problems began.

My GPU was constantly exhausted. The fans were working at max. When I looked at the activity monitor, it showed the system had used over 85 percent of the GPU, while the rest of the tasks running were using the leftover 15 percent. Not always but often.

In addition, a strange error occurred, where I can use the left CMD key with any other key, but V. I can only paste with right CMD+V. Also, when I try to reset the NVRAM using the combination with ALT+CMD+R+P it stopped working since then. I have a feeling it has to do with the CMD key, although the right CMD also doesn‘t seem to work for the NVRAM reset. Even in terminal I cannot reset it right.

There were some upgrades a few months back – during one I could use CMD+V normally, after the next it didn‘t work again.

If there is anyone who had a similar problem and has a solution, please let me know! I would be very grateful.

Thank you so much!

Regards,

Robert

I've encountered issues with some Retina laptops where I cannot perform a PRAM reset or boot into Recovery Mode even though all they keys work fine within macOS itself. The problem is with the Logic Board if an external keyboard has the same problem. It seems you have replaced a GPU Logic Board issue with a Keyboard Logic Board issue.

You can reset the PRAM from the Terminal app using the command line:

sudo nvram -c

You can confirm the NVRAM is empty by checking the values set in the NVRAM:

nvram -p
