iPhone 4 Echo

Every time I call someone, they say that they "echo." Every single time, and they all use different phones. I have a brand new iPhone 4, and I'm not sure if there is a way to fix this.

I currently experience this aswell. The person at the other end of the phone hears their voice echoing rather than mine. I used the wired hands free kit and this solved the issue. I also tested this by unplugging (echo present) and then connecting the hands free kit (echo not present). Questions remain;

1. What is causing it?
2. Who else is experiencing it?
3. Most importantly, what are Apple going to do about it?

I have the same issue. All callers hear an echo of themselves regardless of carrier network or device.

Doesn't happen when on speaker phone nor using bluetooth headset, just when using standard (handheld) speaker mode.

It would be good to get advice from Apple on this, whether this is a hardware related issue or something else (eg. inconsistent restore when upgrading firmware etc).

Just received my iPhone 4 last week. The handheld seems to work fine, however when I plug in the headset, the persons I am speaking to report an annoying muffled echo on their end when they speak. My voice seems to carry fine, as is the hearing on my end, however according to the persons I am speaking with, their voice is being echoed back to them. This seems to occur regardless of whether they are on a land line or mobile, and whether I call them or they call me. Any ideas?

I have the same problem. I plugged the phone into external speakers and when doing so, the callers state they hear an echo even if I put myself on Mute. I had to disconnect the speakers and use a headset instead. Any recommendations for a add-on speakerphone equipment that we can plug the phone into that would charge it and allow for a speakerphone option?

Echos can happen under a number of situations, and even happen on landlines. There is no "fix" because its simply the nature of telecommunications. If you're on a busy cell site where you make most of your calls, you may see most of your calls echo, because there isnt enough bandwidth to encode every signal to every phone, so you end up getting back some of your own transmitted data. This is how it was explained to me several times by out in the field engineers who design build & oversee construction of cell sites. Try making calls in a different location, even 15 feet can make a difference, try to call different times of day, ask your carrier about throughput issues at nearby cell sites and sites for the person at the other end.

It's definately NOT the cell towers or even the carriers that cause this echoing. I have an Iphone 4 and it's SO annoying that I'm debating on returning it. I had a 3g before and had ZERO echo problems with it. My fiancee uses my 3g so whenever someone calls my Iphone 4, I have to call them back on the 3g in order to avoid the echo. Same exact location and no echo from the 3g but does it every time from the 4. I would believe the jargon about it being the cell towers IF my 3g echoed also, but its ONLY the Iphone 4! Love the phone for all features EXCEPT actually functioning as a phone! I wonder if the noise canceling microphone is only active when on speaker phone. Anyone know a way to activate/de-activate the 2nd mic?
