2019 Macbook Pro Greyed out display

This is the second time this has happened. When I returned to my MacBook Pro 2019 that had it's display go to sleep, when it came back on it has a grey tint over it. If I take a screenshot, the picture looks fine, and everything behaves as normal, it's fully functional, there is just a grey tint to everything. The first time this happened I restarted the computer and it was back to normal.

What causes this to occur?

The same problem is described in this macrumors thread:

Yes - it seems to be related to my secondary display adapter. Unplugging the secondary display adapter and plugging it back in seems to "fix" the problem.
