Last night around 9pm CST I received a notification that I needed to reset my Apple ID password. I did so as I hadn’t done that in a long time, but I never received an email that would indicate to me why Apple prompted me to reset my password. Does the notification mean someone was trying to hack my Apple ID?

It was possibly fake - Recognize and avoid phishing messages, phony support calls, and other scams - Apple Support. You should change your password immediately preferably to something very complex and enable two-factor authentication if not enabled already.
