I have always done this with my 2010 MacBook. Now I cannot do so with my brand new computer. I have gone in the trackpad settings to turn off some of the settings to fix this. What am I doing wrong?

You can press the control key and click the trackpad for a secondary click. Or, go to System Preferences > Trackpad, and tick the box for two-finger secondary click.
