is walmart incorrect?

So I went to walmart trying to buy an apple watch series 3 GPS and Cellular and they told me cellular wont work because I do not have a big brand name cellphone plan. Is this true or did they just not want to cell me a watch?

The cellular models require they be supported by the Cellular company you wish to use if you want it to have cell service for calls, messages and internet access, when away from your iPhone and wifi.

Not all cell companies support the watch.

You can see in the following list if the company you use for your iPhone supports the Apple Watch: Apple Watch - Carriers - Apple

With that said, the watch will still work without cell service, with some limitations. See here: Use your Apple Watch without your iPhone nearby - Apple Support
