Old MacBook Pro won’t start up

Mac book pro won’t start properly. After pushing the power button a grey and white screen with the apple logo comes up. There is a spinning wheel and bar at the bottom. The bar will fill about 27% and the screen goes black. Thanks

What is the exact model of the laptop? You can get this information by entering your serial number here:

https://checkcoverage.apple.com/

What version of macOS is being used?

See if you can boot into Safe Mode. If you cannot boot into Safe Mode, then try booting into Recovery Mode (Command + R). If you still have issues, then try booting into Internet Recovery Mode (Command + Option + R) to bypass the local boot drive.

When the screen goes black is the laptop still running? Have you tried connecting an external display?
