Cookies when Private Browsing?

Why is there a list of cookies to clear with Private Browsing enabled? Thought there was no record.

Hi there Parchmentier,

It sounds like you need some more information on how to ensure all cookies are blocked.

We understand that the way you use your device is important to you. Happy to help!

The resource below takes a look at what Private Browsing entails:

Browse in private in Safari on Mac

Specifically the section that states:

"Besides using Private Browsing windows, you can manage cookies and data stored by all websites and prevent cross-site tracking."

Essentially in Private Browsing there are minimized cookies, but we can offer you some further recommendations to block all cookies in your Safari preferences by preventing cross-site trafficking.

We have also included that resource for you below, it should take care that unwanted list of cookies:

Prevent cross-site tracking in Safari on Mac

We hope this resolves any further need for assistance. We appreciate you reaching out to Apple Communities and appreciate the opportunity to get you squared away.

Cheers!

Cookies:

As you visit sites, cookies will be used remember site-entered data such as password, and will then be deleted once the tab is closed.

Clearing your Temporary Internet Files:

  • Cookies perform remembrance of certain site-entered data.
  • Cache keeps a snapshot of the last time you visited a site.

Apple will not let you sign in, if cookies are not remembered, that is because cookies were not remembered.

Thanks Brenden. I already had Safari General Preferences set to"Safari Opens with A New Private Window"...and followed the second above article advice, setting Privacy to Prevent Cross-site tracking. But upon testing, this did not block all cookies. The only thing that did was setting Safari Preferences→Privacy →Block all Cookies. But of course then some sites wouldn't work right, including Apple Forum which prevented me from signing in, period. I'm beginning to wonder if there's an actual fix for this.

Never had any of these odd little issues (posted on the Forum over the past few days) till Tech Support helped me delete and reinstall the OS recently. Any idea why a newly installed OS without any hitches whatsoever would present so many odd little issues?

“Cookies when Private Browsing?: Please pardon the after question...is clearing the Cache the same as clearing History?

No. It is not the same, when clearing:

  • Cookies perform remembrance of certain site-entered data (i.e. a button you selected).

Whereas...

  • Cache keeps a snapshot of the last time you visited a site (i.e. Where you last scrolled to).
