I am trying to wipe my old iPad clean. Help!

I am trying to wipe my very old iPad to factory reset- I think it is an iPad 6. It has been on my shelf for years. I have tried all the steps but never get the recovery mode screen. I do see an iTunes red circle and the power cord with an arrow - I can't remember my passcode and my touch has dead zones anyway so when I try to enter the passcode that I think it is, I can't select the letters or numbers. I have tried connecting this to my Mac Pro lap top holding down the home button- but it is not showing me the image I am supposed to see to recovery mode.

Thank you. This was helpful. I had used this page following all the steps 3 times and I never got the pop up box to allow me to choose to update or restore . It turns out, the connection cord I used between my iPad and my mac pro was bad ! Once I realized it might be the problem and switched them out, I was finally able to wipe my iPad. Part 2 of my problem, my touch screen has dead zones on so I am still not able to use it again because I cannot type my apple ID in to activate it! Time to just scrap it. I am able to ship it to apple for disposal now that it is wiped clean. Thanks again for your response.
