Apple News App Returns to Home Screen Every Time I Close

I’m reading an article in the Apple News app. I get a WhatsApp message. I switch to WhatsApp and answer the message. But when I switch back to the Apple News app, instead of my article being there for me to continue reading, the app automatically returns to the home screen. It does this every time I close the app and reopen, switch to another app, or close my phone and reopen. It’s very inconvenient, especially if I’m 9-10 clicks deep into the app and can’t get back to my article. Can anyone tell me why this happens and if there is anything I can do about it? Many thanks!
