My MacBook has a cancel sign on the start up screen and it keeps telling me I need a start up disk. What do I do?

You may try and see if your Mac can start into recovery.

This would usually give you access to tools, to fix Mac.

Other options to access the macOS and helpful tools..

This has similar clues to above article, and more detail.

(Internet recovery could allow online startup from servers.)
