MacBook Air 11 inch - old laptop forgot the admin password

I have this MacBook that I haven't used in over a year because I purchased the 13 inch and now I have forgotten the admin password. I tried resetting the password on the main screen with my Apple ID but it will not accept my newest Apple ID password to verify my account. I have been trying to either reset the password or completely erase and reset the MacBook to at least restore it back to the general factory settings. Has anyone else been in this situation? If so, how did you get around it - because of COVID I am unable to get to an apple store or live chat with apple.
