Why am i unable to see my homepod pair in the volume settings on my mac? i can only see homepod L & R separately, however in iTunes it shows as a pair

Output to a Homepod stereo pair from OSX Catalina It seems bizarre, but 2 years after the launch of the Homepod, OSX still does not support output to a Homepod stereo pair other than via Itunes. This means you can't listen to youtube videos or Netflix movies in stereo from your Macbook. It is just me that thinks this is a ridiculous oversight and that it is a fundamental issue with Homepod? Surely Homepods were intended (at least partly) for this specific purpose? It seems to me that the much vaunted Apple Ecosystem has dropped the ball here.

Stereo HomePod pair shows as individual pods in System Preferenced - Sound I see comments that this is not supported in MacOS, however this worked perfectly well on Mojave for me, since March of this year. After changing MacOS to Catalina it continued to work. Due to too many bugs and problems with Catalina I restored the iMac to Mojave (10.14.6) but now I cannot get the pair to show, except in iTunes. The pair works fine with stand-alone and iTunes. Any ideas on what happened appreciated.

HomePod pairing isn't properly supported by the main Mac audio system, only by iTunes, or Music in Catalina. No idea why.
