My iPhone is running 13.6. I have CarPlay installed in my Golf. I note that CarPlay has been updated with the apps now on the left but in my case they are still on the right. I expected the update to incorporate this new version, but no. Spoke to Apple support who told me to go to the car dealer to get the upgrade which does not sound the way Apple do things. Anyone care to update me?
I had not realise that the update to CarPlay will come with iOS 14. I am now using the public beta and the updated CarPlay that came with it. Interesting the apps are on the right where as the screen shots on Apple sites shots the on the left. I wonder if it is clever and sees a right hand drive vehicle so puts the app list on the right nearer the driver.

It sounds like you are having an issue where your car's CarPlay software is not updated and Apple Support suggested to contact the car dealer to upgrade your car's software.
