Texts going to wrong device

My wife has an iPhone and iPad (all under same Apple ID login). I have a samsung phone and an iPad with apple idea of my email. When she texts me, sometimes it sends to my cell phone and sometimes to my iPad. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to which. My guess it has something to do with my contact info holding both my cell # and email (aka Apple ID). Why is it doing this to her, and how can it be corrected so that when she texts my cell it goes to my cell? This has caused problems when I don’t have my iPad and she needs to contact me and thinks she’s texting my cell.

Hello there ohiog8r,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities! We understand that you are having an issue with receiving text messages from your wife on the wrong device. We are more than happy to help you out with this.

To prevent your iPad from receiving messages, you would need to navigate to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > and unselect your Apple ID. This will prevent any iMessages from coming to your iPad and they will only be sent to your phone number as SMS text messages.

We hope this helps! Have a great day!
