Adding select songs to ipod

I have the latest model Ipod touch. I have over 800 songs in my library. I bought an identical Ipod for my sister, but I only want to download select songs to her Ipod. How do I do this easily?

If you're using iTunes (and I'm assuming by your comment that you are), use Sync selected Playlists, artists, albums and genres to manage her iPod.

Using iTunes, each device can have its own options for what goes onto the iPod. You can continue to manage your iPod in the same way as you do now, but you can set your sister's iPod to have its own content.

I think this will be easier if your sister tells you what she wants on the iPod and you create a Playlist in your iTunes Library that contains all the songs that she wants to add to it (I'll explain the advantage of this in a minute). You can have more than one Playlist if you wish, although one should be enough for now. Name them so that they make sense to you (e.g. Sister 01, Sister 02 etc.)

Now connect the iPod to your Library and click on the iPod icon that appears at the top of the iTunes window:

That will display the Device/Settings/Summary pane. Using the screenshot below, follow the steps outlined beneath the picture.

  • start by clicking on Device/Settings/Music (1.):

  • make sure that Sync Music (2.) is selected
  • choose Selected Playlists, artists, album and genres (3.). Only now will sections in 4 be displayed
  • in the sections that now appear (4.), under the Playlists heading, look for the one you've made for your sister. Click on it to put the tick in the box
  • now click on the Sync (or Apply) button in the lower right corner of the iTunes window (not shown in the screenshot). This will add only the content of that Playlist to her iPod
  • Done & Dusted
  • your sister does not have to use the playlist, it is simply the method for getting what she wants onto her iPod. She can play by artist, album, song or genre, just as you might be doing

Here's the best thing of all though (bear with me, it may not seem like it at first):

    • using the option to sync selected playlists, artists, albums and genres does not include being able to select individual songs. So the only method for adding just a few songs from any specific album to an iPod is to use a Playlist (to which you can add individual songs)
    • also, if you do not use a Playlist to add songs to her iPod, you will have to select each artist, album or genre from the various lists in section 4, that I mentioned above. Even with 800 songs in your Library, that's going to be a faff, especially when you want to add additional music to her iPod
    • So - a Playlist is the solution (it really is) (plus, see the next point)
    • when your sister tells you that she now wants the something else that's in your Library added to the iPod, it's bound to be an inconvenient time, even if you're working on your computer. But - and here's that best thing - by using a Playlist, all you have to do is drag the additional songs etc. to her Playlist in your Library, even if she's not present. Then, when it is convenient, connect her iPod to your Library and let iTunes sync the playlist again, thereby adding the additional music. That's all you need to do, none of that mucking about detailed above

Is that easy?

Once you set it up, yes it is!
