Lost Airpods

I have lost my airpods and since they are in their case I can't track where they are now but I can see the last place I used them on the Find my iPhone app. However, I was wondering if I will be able to see where they are if someone else connects to them and uses them. I'm asking since there might be a possibility that they were stolen. So if someone stole them and connected them to their own phone, will I be able to see where they are now on the map or will it still just show the last location that they were connected to my own phone?
