-69845 'File system verify or repair failed' (1TB WD Elements SE external hard drive, Macbook)

My external hard drive no longer appears in Finder, and in Disk Utility appears greyed out. When I attempt to mount it using Disk Utility, I get an error message reading:

'Could not mount "[my hard drive". (com.apple.DiskManagement.disenter error 0.)'.

When I attempted to run a First Aid on it, it reads:

File system exit code is 8

Restoring the original state found as unmounted.

File system verify or repair failed. : (-69845)

What exactly does this mean, and is there any way I can repair or otherwise access the disk?

Thanks for getting back.

I've rebooted in Safe Mode and tried to run a First Aid on the drive using Disk Utility but unfortunately I'm still getting exactly the same problem.

Hi,

I am having the same error and have done all of the steps you gave above. Still getting the error. There are no partitions on my drive. Time machine last ran 9/20 so I was fine until then.
