I have the first generation apple watch with watch OS 4 and it says it's up to date. Which generation is required to have watch OS 5?

Yours is apparently the so-called Series 0.
watchOS 6 is current, so anything new you have will update to that.
Series 1 through the current Series 5 support watchOS 6.
watchOS 6 requires iOS 13.
Are you possibly trying to pair a (newer) Watch with an (older) iPhone 6 or earlier?
If you’re buying new from Apple or an authorized reseller, decide if you want Series 3 or Series 5. That’s it.

A Watch purchased from Apple will be running watchOS 6, whether Series 3 or Series 5.
If you pair with an iPhone 6s or newer running iOS 13, any Series 1 through Series 5 will update to and run watchOS 6.
You can’t easily even get to watchOS 5 now, and watchOS 5 is only necessary for a Watch paired with an iPhone 6 or earlier.
If you buy a new Series 3 it will have watchOS 6.x
Hi. No I was trying to do the compete function through activities with someone else but I would need watch OS 5 at the minimum to do it. I guess I was just asking if I was to get series 3, would it come with watch OS 5 at minimum? Or do I have to get series 5 for the latest software to use this function?
