exfat external drive

I was told by a fellow apple user that if I formatted my external drive to exfat I would be able to use it interchangeably with both my windows and mac computers. I can't get my mac to read my external exfat drive. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

Hey there 05saveme,

We understand that your external drive is formatted in ExFat format but is not showing up on your Mac. We'd like to help.

To begin, take a moment to review the steps here: Format a disk for Windows computers in Disk Utility on Mac

This explains how you can use Disk Utility to format the drive into ExFat format which should be compatible with Windows. Is that what you did?

If so, it's possible the drive my need to be formatted again in this format. Note that this will erase the drive.
