Backup ERROR

I'm trying to backup my iPhone on iTunes but I keep getting this error message:

iTunes could not back up the iPhone because the backup session failed.

I have tried numerous things to fix this but I can't - can anyone help???

I have the same error. This prevents me from upgrading to iOS 4.0.1 etc.

I'm having a similar problem, only iTunes doesn't throw any errors, the whole system just bogs down during a sync, and I get kernel panic errors in the console logs such as this, even with a complete hard-core uninstall/reinstall of iTunes:

Eventually, sometimes, the thing syncs, but it takes a l-o-n-g time, as in the better part of an hour.

This all started happening after I had problems with my iPhone 4 and an Apple Store tech did a complete restore on my phone. Again, I've already taken the desperate measure of completely uninstalling iTunes per Apple's KB article and reinstalling it, but the problem persists.

Any suggestions as to how to make things work the way they used to, i.e., properly and smoothly, would be welcome.
