I want to delete my old messages conversations from my iphone so that I can save space. However, I do not want to lose the messages forever, so I would like to back them up to the cloud. I DO NOT want to sync with my cloud. Just archive to the cloud. If I just turn on iCloud backup, it match my phone, which I do not want.

To delete existing conversations, swipe left on the thread in Messages.
You’ll have to swipe left on each thread.
It’s also possible to set an expiration, in Settings > Messages > Keep Messages
Archiving conversations is not as easily feasible as deleting conversations. Deleting is easy.
Anyone else think this apple up to their old data storage tricks again? “What application uses the most storage on the most people’s phone? It’s ours? Great! Let’s make it really hard for people to delete that data.”
