how do i rename an ipod in itunes

how do i rename an ipod in itunes? I was told I merely needed to click on the name on the left side (where it displays the device), but when I click NOTHING HAPPENS. A rename should be a no-brainer to do. Please help.

Once your device is seen by iTunes, click on the icon that appears just below the iTunes menu bar:

  • this then displays the Device/Settings/Summary pane
  • IMPORTANT - you need to wait until iTunes is not working with the iPod. If iTunes is backing up, or syncing with the iPod, you will not be able to change the name. The Now Playing area (the one with the song title Don't Look Any Further in the screenshot below) will indicate that iTunes is busy, with an appropriate message
  • once iTunes has finished working with the iPod, click on current name area, as indicated in the screenshot below (the orange box is my highlighting)

  • the name will now be highlighted in blue and have a black box around it

  • simply type in the new name that you have chosen (you do not need to delete the existing one, the blue highlighting will take care of that

Clicking on the device name (which appears at 2 different places on an iTunes screen) does NOT work. On either the device icon shown in the upper left corner, or on the device named under devices on the left hand side menu, neither offers me an option to rename the iPod. This ought to be simple, but nothing about iTunes is either simple or user-friendly.
