Hi a friend have me her old I iPhone 7 for me to give to my son for his birthday. She removed all her info and restored it to factory settings but now I can not activate it it says needs an update. Is that something I can fix myself?

If you are not the owner and do not have the Apple ID and Password then there is no way that you can get into this iPhone unless the original owner shares the Apple ID and password with you.
